If I can help one woman/couple from having to go through what I went through, it's worth it.
My friend asked me about my Mirena experience a few months ago. She had been considering getting a Mirena IUD at the suggestion of her doctor. She thought that what happened to me couldn't possibly happen to her. After showing my friend my surgery photos and letting her read more information online (including other women's horror stories), she has opted to stay on the pill. :)
I'm sure there might be women out there that love Mirena but, from what I can see, those women are few and far between.
I had the IUD removed in January of 2007 and I STILL have some issues because of scar tissue that has formed on my uterus around the puncture holes caused by Mirena. Some months my periods are just fine but other months (like this month) I get EXTREME pains (way more than a normal 'cramp'), dizziness to the point of getting blurred vision and problems just walking around. My doctor says these things are caused by the Mirena IUD (I never had these issues before Mirena) and I will, unfortunately, probably have to deal with them for the rest of my life. All they can do is give me pain medicine and doctors notes so I can miss work and rest at home.
I just can't fathom why this IUD is still on the market.
I did attempt to hire a lawyer for a malpractice suit (delay of treatment and misdiagnosis of the issue). I also lost my job while I was going through these issues so there was also a possible case of unlawful termination by my employer. Believe it or not, I have contacted about 10 law firms and NONE of them will take this case.
I guess there is nothing I can do legally but I sure as heck will warn everyone I know about the Mirena IUD and how awful it truly is. Ladies, you have choices. There are MANY good forms of birth control on the market today. DON'T get the Mirena IUD and DON'T let your doctor talk you into getting one!
