Has he been applying jelly to his lips? You might want to tell your son to keep a tube of pure petroleum jelly with him at all times and apply it to his mouth whenever it drys out. It might take awhile for his cracks to heal and his skin's normal moisture to return.

Have you asked your son to use band aids on his mouth corners when he's sleeping?
