I don't know, Squeaky.

Since I get up frequently through the night (which I am finally getting on top of), I try to remember to alternate...someone said it is normal to move in ones sleep and I don't think I do much anymore.

Back, or front, never appealed to me.

Though I did notice one thing...

...The numbness from one arm under a person was due to a mushed out kapok mattress. I added a 1 inch foam mattress pad, and changed the bed entirely. I now sleep on memory foam, with a fiber cover attached. It suits me fine.

Another thing I tried was stretching my arms/shoulders away from my body, somewhat. I also often remember the Alexander Technique four statments, particularly the one about the neck, where the head rests easily on its back edge on top of the spine. That pulls the chin gently in...even when ones head is one cheek on the pillow.

I free any bit of the pillow that may be under the shoulder I'm lying on, and pull the pillow flatter under my head. It tends to bunch against the headboard, leaving my head on an uphill slant.

Good thing about breathing through the nose, I think.

I thought the stuff about a little less air with each breath, sounded interesting...though I haven't tried it yet.

Stretching impulse exercises feel good from time to time...even lying down.

I once did about ten minutes of them, beside the bed, in the dark. It brought me a remarkably sweet sleep.

Sometimes I use the period of drifting off as a kind of 'meditation' time. I know nothing about meditation except to listen to ones breathing...very pleasant.

I would guess that awakening with the numbness is a good thing...putting you back in charge, or something. It's kind of neat that your body can do that in the depths of sleep.

I'll surely be thinking of you through the night.

My best,

F.
