It is one thing to have experienced experiences that were in the ballpark of being similar to what you described. I've had them. But, at least from my experiences, it is another thing to be sure about the character of the experience....like, was it an encounter with a spirit or was it an encounter with something that may share similarities with a spirit .... or might masquerade as a spirit....just wasn't the real thing? Rudenski mentioned the Higher Self, and while I accept the possibility that we all have such a thing, I also accept that there generally tends to be obstacles running interference between our lower self and higher self, and among these obstacles are demons which have the job of masquerading as spirits. Just look at how common the expression or observation is made by one person of another person ".... was always struggling to cope with whatever demons they had inside them....". From one person to the next, a person's collective demon status is not at all unlike a person's collective health status; we all have a collective condition of health, be it good, not so good, or somewhere in the middle. Without putting any kind of descriiption to or making any kind of judgment of, we all have health. Upon closer inspection, from one person to the next, we are likely to be found not identical.... yes, possibly similar, but not identical, we all grapple with our health in our own ways. Likewise with demons. We each grapple with whatever combination of them we have inside us.
Without wanting to cause or open up debate on other vast topics ripe for their own heated debates, suffice it to say that there are a fairly wide supply of views, especially historical views... ancient views.... and information .... and opinions, that discuss the theory / reality of the makeup of demons. For instance, there are established views that down through the ages, demons have each been assigned names to help distinguish them and identify them from each other since there are so many demons and sometimes demons have a knack for sharing their specialties between them. Down through the ages, each demon has taken on a range of names they are known by, names that in some way characterize the works they have been known by. "Bacchus" is said to be one of the names assigned to the demon that rules over addictions. The mere mention of that word - addictions, will often deceive people into thinking only about certain kinds of well-known addictions, like, substance addictions, like tobacco, or intoxicating liquors, or other substances "drugs". But then there is the view that Bacchus does not need to be continually fed any specific of these substance to keep it happy... so long as the person inside which Bacchus dwells is feeding it something that they (the person) behaves in ways to indicate they cannot live without, Bacchus is pleased.
EDIT: to clarify, "spirit" in my mind, is one and the same with a wholesome and benevolent influence, as distinguished from, for instance, spirit-like influences of non-benevolent, unwholesome characters, like, demons. So, this is a long way of going to set up the question, but, it seemed necessary in order to put a frame of reference to the question: are you sure the experience you've mentioned is dealing strictly with spirit, and if yes, how is it you are able to be sure?
