Someone should tell the 7th Day Adventists.

I know that to reduce the natural toxins in the skins of dried beans (which stop bugs from eating them) it is suggested to preboil them for 5 minutes, and to pour that water down the drain...then cooking them in fresh.

Peas apparently won't cook soft if you add salt.
