Actually it does breakdown to sodium chloride in the body it just depends on what it oxidizes. If it loses 1 electron it becomes chlorite if all 5 if becomes sodium chloride. I read somewhere it was about 4 to 1 chloride to chlorite, ultimately though it all becomes chloride and oxygen
