Hi Karen,
I've used natural progesterone cream (Pro-Gest by Emerita) for several years to assist with PMS and endometriosis, and more recently peri-menopausal symptoms. I have had significant benefits from its use, and no complications.
Your body does manufacture progesterone, but the balance of progesterone and estrogen is often a problem. Stress, a sluggish liver overloaded with toxins, nutritional deficiencies and excessive environmental and pharmaceutical estrogens can all contribute to estrogen dominance.
Dr. Mercola does offer cautions regarding the use of natural progesterone, but he still advocates it, and recently offered a sublingual natural progesterone tablet...but demand was so high that it is temporarily unavailable.
Transitions for Health (and their retail division, Emerita) also produces natural progesterone cream that has gone through extensive clinical trials. Their website has lots of information regarding the cream and other women's health issues. Emerita offers a natural progesterone cream in single application packets if you are concerned about the dosage.

Also, the herb vitex (also known as chasteberry) is very beneficial for rebalancing hormones and assists the body in it's own progesterone synthesis.
