Few doctors will test for mineral balance without a specific cause. Even then, only a handful of tests are available for only a handful of minerals. Vitamins are almost never tested, and very few of those even have a test to check them. Not to mention that many tests are not very reliable at measuring tissue levels of nutrients. The best thing I can suggest, is that you do a good bit of research on the main vitamins and minerals that you take, and see what nutrients interfere with or assist those vit/mins. Try to keep that info in mind when planning your supplements. And as soon as you feel that you can, gradually incorporate foods rich in those nutrients on a regular basis to allow you to remove the supplements over time. I would always suggest a well-balanced multi, not necessarily high-potency, everyday because of the nutrient-poor soils that are used in farming, even organic.
Food really is the easiest path to health, but it requires much more variety than many people incorporate in their day to day lives. Until that can be improved, use sites like acu-cell.com, and good ol' google to help you find the answers. Another interesting site that has a LOT of nutritional info is ithyroid.com. It has a pretty substantial supplements section, and gives some details about nutrient interactions.
Good luck.
