the principle involved is one of efficiency. those early filaments were thick which is why they dont burn out. that also means it takes a lot of electricity to get them glowing. a thinner element will glow brighter with much less wattage use. different metals also play a part in longevity.
for big lights i prefer high pressure sodium. the smart people today will invest in LEDs for the home and demand the frequencies approximate sunlight for a more natural spectrum of color. LEDs are much more efficient than mercury vapor. full spectrum lighting at the proper frequencies is the wave of the future. if we have a future.
