Shortangle, I agree the chemistry can get a bit confusing but this is my understanding of it
You gave a list of synonyms for chlorite they all mean the same thing, except perhaps chlorous acid with has a hydrogen atom and the chlorite minerals are different. We are talking about ClO2- which is the chlorite anion so is negatively charged
ClO2 is chlorine dioxide which is of cause a gas so you have them the wrong way round
TCDO is a stabilised complex containing the chlorite ion which limits its toxic effects
I think the comparison you mentioned is questionable because this one appears to contradict it and is likely to be correct as studies so far with WF10 demonstrated its safety
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8131712
Of course chlorine dioxide gas can be liberated from chlorite salts but in TCDO chlorite appears to be stabilised so it does not do so
chlorine dioxide is different in its effects and toxicity to chlorite salts and
other chlorite containing molecules but they are all oxidizers
What we would like to know in the case of sodium chlorite solution is what exactly happens when it is ingested, either acidified or not, what the breakdown products are and what beneficial and toxic effects they have
In varying amounts these are sodium chlorite, chlorine dioxide, chlorous acid
hypochlorous acid sodium chlorate and sodium chloride
Of course there is a difference in that ingestion of these chemicals can irritate the digestive system in too high a concentration
