You could probably build a solar distiller for fifty bucks. They are the simplest design, so they are the cheapest. All you need is a water basin and a tilted glass canopy to catch condensation and roll it into an out port. It takes no energy, other than the sun, and depending on how large you build it, will change the amount of water you can get out of it.

You can probably find some free designs on the internet for children's experiments or hobbyist websites for cheap projects. That’s all I can suggest, really, I came here by accident and noticed the people telling you to go spend two hundred or more bucks, and just thought to myself that, that isn't right. If you have a friend who's good at building stuff, a solar distiller should be no problem for him, if you can get the parts.

As I said, a water tight enclosure (black to absorb as much solar energy as possible) covered by a tilted glass canopy (you might be able to use Plexiglas, I don't know) with separate troughs for input water and distilled water (and probably a hose to get it out with). There is probably more to it than that, but that is at least the basics. I learned this stuff in grade school when they talked about the water cycle and why your car window fogs up or your beer (soda) can sweats. Condensation, evaporation, precipitation, etc. Earths natural filter.
