It is the irritation that results in the bowel rapidly expelling its contents when using laxatives. You wouldn't necessarily feel this irritation...although some people experience griping, cramping or a raw feeling. What is most important is that these laxatives weaken bowel tone when used with any frequency which means a decline in peristalsis and eventually the body becomes dependent on them in order to move the bowels.
