If it is wide enough, Watermelon have a shallow root system(I think). I have squash in a old plastic sandbox, that is about six inches deep. My watermellon vines have escaped the pots and are running everywhere.

BTW, thanks for the inverting inspiration. I'm inverting again, and it's wonderful.
