Chlorine dioxide is the most powerful antimicrobial agent known to man, it's a fungicide, algicide, bactericide, removes bio-film and a powerful oxidizer.
New approvals for it's use are being found each day. 65 mouthwashs in the US use NaClO2 between 700 and 1200 ppm . Pro fresh, closys11, therabreath and even Amway's product neways eliminator.
ClO2 is now widely used instead of chlorine to super-chlorinate pools, spas, hot tubs etc, Anthrax approval, Avian Bird Flu Approval etc etc.
Clo2 extends the shelf-life of products dipped or sprayed with/in it by knocking the SPC count down, in other words stopping the enzymatic activity from happening. NaClO2 has just been approved by the FDA as a treatment for genital herpes etc, etc,.
