oral hygiene is just as important on a fast as at any other time, and you will find conflicting opinions within this forum as to how best to go about it, but I always found that brushing daily with water only was sufficient for me: the very worst part was in alleviating the "bad taste in the mouth" throughout the fast which can be very annoying. This is what Shelton has to say on the matter...............
"Throughout most of the fast, the fasting individual is annoyed by a very bad taste in the mouth. This may be alleviated somewhat by a daily scrubbing of the tongue with a toothbrush. This should not be done, however, until after the tongue has been examined by. the doctor who is conducting the fast. Mouth washes, lemon juice, etc., are not to be recommended. Gargling the throat is certainly of no value. As the fast progresses and the tongue clears up, the taste becomes less and less offensive, until, when the fast should be broken, the taste in the mouth is very pleasant."
Essential oils are not to be recommended internally as this will interfere with the fasting process and inhibit or even prevent full ketosis and therefore cleansing and healing. The external use of oils on the skin will allow its absorption and not recommended either.
There is no mainstream "cure" for arthritis, except the palliation of symptoms, where with the passage of time, the condition becomes progressively worse and worse. It is a bleak prospect.
However, fasting will eradicate arthritis, but the time required to do so will depend on its severity and for how long you have suffered from it: that is unless the joints are "ankylosed"---fused---if so, the affected joints will remain ankylosed. There is no way to un-fuse ankylosed joints. They remain fixed and immovable.
Do you have inflammation and pain within the joints of your right arm, elbow and wrist Motherweary? and how many years have you suffered from it?
Dr Shelton lists two examples of (many) patients suffering from arthritis: the first of 28 years standing, and the second of shorter duration of a few months to a year; the former took two years to recover completely, but this was a man who relied on the aid of crutches and could not turn his head from side to side whatsoever. This man underwent a lengthy fast of 36 days: he was freed of pain, was restored to "usefulness" without the aid of his crutches and could enjoy life again. With careful feeding and living habits in between, he underwent another lengthy fast, daily sunbaths, and then exercise within his capabilities. His spine is now almost straight, the use of his arms and legs are normal, he can turn his head normally, he walks in an upright position, he does not need the use of cane or crutches, he has no pain, he looks the picture of health, and he now works like a slave.
The latter patient underwent a fast of only three weeks, but it freed her of all pain and inflammation and restored normal movement to her joints.
It will require time and effort on your part to recover completely, where a possible radical change in living habits will also be needed to achieve the maximum benefit and your recovery from this chronic disease.
Stretch marks and scars are not my domain, but there have been many previous posts on this subject if you would like to search thru the postal archives of the forum, to see what benefit is to be had for this. The skin however is one of the main beneficiaries of fasting.
Mood swings and Depression can develop with the adjustment of feeding from the bodys normal glucose to fats in the process of ketosis during the first 4 to 5 days, but the beneficial effects of fasting on the mind are well documented...........
In relation to mood swings...........
high insulin levels can prevent the body from using fats/ketones as fuel. So it must rely on blood glucose, and if you suddenly stop eating carbs/protein it takes your body a while to make the change and adjust.
Also, for a healthy non-obese person, a drop in blood Sugar and insulin takes place simultaneously, so there are no nasty side-effects. For an obese person or a person who used to be on a high carb' diet it can take longer to readjust. In the meantime the body will have used most if not all of the blood sugar, but if someone still has problems with using fat as a fuel source, you will feel hypoglycemic. You can still feel hypoglycemic with normal Blood Sugar and don't feel hypoglycemic with low blood sugar. It all depends on how your body is dealing with fats as an energy source. (Ketosis)
Switching over to fat burning can be rough and tough (been there, done it seen it) and can cause headaches etc! Once your body is used to being in deep Ketosis, a Water Fast probably wouldn't be a problem, as your body will then be used to using fat for energy.
At any given time, your body's blood only contains the equivalent of less than 1 teaspoon of Sugar (less than 4g carb'). It doesn't take much to have a healthy blood sugar level.
The definition & process of ketosis..........
Due to the lack of incoming food, the body must turn to its own resources, a function called autolysis. Autolysis is the breaking down of fat stores in the body in order to produce energy. The liver is in charge of converting the fats into a chemical called a ketone body, the metabolic substances acetoacetic acid and beta-hydroxybutyric acid, and then distributing these bodies throughout the body via the blood stream. When this fat utilization occurs, free fatty acids are released into the blood stream and are used by the liver for energy. The less one eats, the more the body turns to these stored fats and creates these ketone bodies, the accumulation of which is referred to as ketosis.
Fasting can be easier and more encouraging with like-minded individuals who are fasting in a retreat, but for the majority of us, this is not possible because of time or the expense of doing so; it is therefore best to have an understanding family who are sympathetic to your goals and reasons for fasting, and be away from food (and the smell of food) if at all possible.
