My husband and I were just having this discussion from all the alcoholics in my family--what about a general feeling of feeling like crap, tired/lethargic etc...so they "self-medicate" to try to make themselves feel better--only doing more damage to a poor liver that's already not functioning right.

Vicious cycle.
