I am going through a period of unemployment right now, and really in a state of limbo. I just don't want to go back into the corporate world. Although I appear, and am competent, I just don't feel like a good fit. This I do know, if you don't find your passion or any joy at your job, then it will suck your soul. Days turn into years into decades, and you wonder where the hell your life went. It's all so complicated.
Don't laugh, but a friend just gave me the Anthony Robbins Personal Power II tapes for by B-Day I've seen the info-commercials, and was slightly intrigued, but I just didn't like his big head.....I know, that sounds silly, but it bugged me.
The long and short of it, my husband and I started listening to those tapes. My husband was mocking his voice, and I was listening with a grain of cynicism. Then, on the third day of the series, wham, I had an ah ha moment that almost knocked my socks off. All he asked was, what is it that you love, gives you passion, makes your eyes light up? He told the story of himself - he loved to talk to people and study human behavior, and give advice. Duh...I broke it down as simple as that for myself. Now I need to figure out what to do with this info. I guess in the next few tapes I'll figure out how to do that....but for the first time in years, I have a goal....I'm so jazzed.
Why am I telling you this? Because I don't want you to wait until you're 50, like me, to try to find yourself. I'm not suggesting you buy those tapes, but I think it might be a good time to assess. This will come in stages in your life, but learning what you have learned with this first job is an important step towards figuring out what you want.
Believe it or not, staying under the radar and showing up everyday does not give a stellar assessment. Corporations like actively involved, verbal employees that express their intelligence and involvement in the process. It's the safe way to go, but it won't put you out there on the front line.
Be very proactive about setting up your exit, and above all do it with grace. You need to save the face of your siblings, because that will serve you well later, whether you know it now or not.
Anyway, this is my 2 cents on the subject. I wish you well and hope that assessment is painless for you!
