I'm fascinated by the interpersonal relationship of women in business. So much so, that I sought a PhD in the subject. Perhaps someday I'll live my dream and study this complicated area in depth.
I'd love to hear from the women how their relationships have been with other women. How do you think woman to woman communication differs from man to man, or man to woman? Do you think that woman mentor, and support other womens goals and achievements, or do you think the opposite happens?
If you believe that woman have difficulties in this communication, where do you think this comes from? Have women been taught to mistrust other women? If you believe this, where do you think they learn this behavior?
Do you think that women's relationships with other women are formed through parental training, or by peers, or a combination?
I was endlessly fascinated to see grown women exhibit behavior that I saw in Junior High School. I truly believe that some of the way we grow up to see other women very much correlate to our school years, and especially puberty.
There is also an age related attitude, that I believe is handed down to women managers. Those managers in the 1970 were rarely allowed to climb to high levels in companies. Some were barred by human resource policies. They worked hard to achieve whatever level they were able to climb, often giving up marriage and family life. Some were very bitter when younger women, able to achieve more, and have marriages started to work under them. But those women often held back from having it all, because it was still very difficult to achieve with family. And they were bitter with their employees, young women, who came into the job with such entitlement, not feeling that anything should hold them back.
I think this handing down of bitter resentment is one of the reasons women have learned to distrust women in positions of power over them.
It's very complicated, but it's reality is visible in any job.
Please share your stories. I'd be fascinated to hear about them.
Thanks, Molly
