Figs do great around here in general. I know people with huge fig trees. (I'm jealous!) My late grandfather had 2 big ones at his house. Of course back when he was alive, I didn't like figs, so I never ate them. :-(
Some late frosts in spring but no damp/freezing fall. More like hot dry fall! It really never freezes here, winter is mild and only occasionally dips down into the 30's, maybe a night or two in the 20's on occasion.
The soil is indeed clay but I assume that figs do okay in clay since they do well around here. I really wasn't planning on doing amended soil around the planting since it's hard enough just to dig the hole in the first place, much less a bigger hole!
