Karen I wouldn't rule out allergies just yet unless your doctor has already done a thorough round of allergy tests. Your possible folliculitis does seem more severe and much more quickly spread than many of ours. For that I'm so sorry as we all know how much it hurts. While I'm sure your doctor has probably ruled out Eczema, I have seen it do some terrible things to my kids and it's all allergy related. My oldest daughter is allergic to nickel (the most common allergen in the world) and has a terrible outbreak of "Ick or Icth(can't remember how to say it)" that develops in spots around her body. It can only be controlled by constantly covering the snaps of her jeans with a barrier and steroids and wearing ONLY sterling silver jewelry (hypo allergenic contains nickel). My other daughter has so many allergies that we just periodically have to put her through a steroid treatment to bring down the severity of her Eczema. She is basically allergic to the world. I developed allergies to certain animals in my late 20's and a few years ago I had a terrible outbreak from head to toe with hives, two weeks in a row, but the allergiest couldn't figure out what it was. It did go away however, and since your condition hasn't, your doctor may be right that it's folliculitis. Have you been put on any anti-biotics? If you do go on them DO NOT QUIT them until your condition dissapears completely. If an anti-biotic treatment works (it's usually only a temporary help...not permanant) you should see a reduction with in a month. Some anti-biotics are really harsh and I couldn't take my first ones. I tried three before finding one that worked. Unfortunately I had one little spot of folliculitis left on my head when I stopped using them. Over time I let it spread and didn't go back for treatment till it was to late. By then those buggers had built a nice resistance to the anti-biotic and now nothing seems to work. So if you do start anti-biotics use caution, their effectiveness is limited and often short lived.
No one really knows how we get this, but some seemed to have gotten it after haircuts possibly. I try to make sure that who ever does my hair knows my condition and that it is absolutely critical they put everything in a bacteria killing soak for a long time before using the tools on anyone else. This is especially important for combs and brushes, not so much curling irons. Also, you should know that if you used to give blood, if folliculitis is some thing you definitely have, you can not give blood again. Have you had any blood transusions of late? Many people give blood who are infected with dumb things like folliculitis and don't even know they have a condition that can spread to others through blood. I know this because I used to be one of those people and when I found out that I had folliculitis and NOT pimples on my head and let the Red Cross know next time I went to give blood, they told me not to give anymore. They do NOT pick up on every type of bacterial infection known to man when they screen blood.
Once again I'm sorry I don't have a solution for you, but you will be in my prayers as your condition sounds pretty intense even for the seasoned ones among us.
