Yes! This is me, dp9, the FORMER absolutely gung-ho, staunch, yellow dog Texas state GOP delegate, majorly involved in the GOP party process, idol worshipper of GWB and His Enlightedness Ronnie Reagan, who just hung up her GOP party guns for the last time. I publically and formally detach myself from the Republican Party and move to the aisle between parties as an Independent Voter.

What happened?

Texas GOP county/senate conventions. That's what happened.

What do grassroots conservatives really care about... I mean, really? Pro-life (check, except the issue has no business being in the government's jurisdiction in the first place), pro-gun ownership (check), anti-gay (check, see comment on pro-life), and tax cuts to make the fiscal conservatives happy (check).

But what do grassroots GOP conservatives care about once you get past those issues?...?...? (sound of crickets chirping on a quiet summer night)

These really, really sweet folks DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!

They support the war in Iraq because of "9/11 and Saddam Hussein." (!!!) They trust GWB because "he knows a lot more than we do." When I tell them how the whole war is being mismanaged (I mean, c'mon. "Mismanaged" is hardly an anti-war comment, is it?) they get glossy-eyed and say- I'm not making this up- " There are some things I think we are better off not knowing." I tell them we have to choose candidates who promise to uphold our Constitutional rights or our country is dead in the water and they smile and nod and say that's why they are supporting John McCain. For real!

I ask them about McCain. Where is he on border security? Where is he on Iran? Where is he on doling out government favors to Big E, Big Pharma, and Big Box? Where is he on the NAU? Where is he on the environment?... OK, I don't ask too many conservatives that question! :-)

Their answer? HE'S A REPUBLICAN and we can't let a Democrat win!

Geez! People, I was there! "Them" was me, and I they! I thought I was so smart back then. I helped there to be a GOP sweep throughout the state of Texas back in 2004. Just about every seat for every office was filled with Republican bottoms. This included the judicial system, the legislative system, everything. You know what the fruit of all that is? Favors for corporations at the expense of individuals! But did I know? NO!

So you know what would happen if John McCain got in the White House? The good little conservative Christians in the GOP would go to sleep, knowing "their man" was going to take care of everything for them.

To me, Hillary = John McCain, except Hillary has her health care agenda. But if Hillary or Obama got in there and did the EXACT SAME THINGS that McCain would do, the conservatives would be screaming bloody murder. They would!

We (the GOP) had a chance to put Ron Paul in there, and we blew it. I'm getting stories from the conventions that there was all kinds of Robert's Rules of Order bending plus actual convention policy breaking (such as filling county convention delegate seats with people who didn't vote in the primary). I'm hearing stories that some of the Paul delegates were unruly, too, just so you get a fair picture).

For personal reasons (like this little event called WACO that occured 30 minutes away from my house just about exactly 15 years ago) I can't vote for Hillary. But I WON'T vote for McCain because he will put the politically active conservative evangelical Christian Right to sleep. If he gets out of the convention, I MIGHT just vote for the communist with the middle name Hussein just to keep the blood moving through the conservatives' veins.

I never thought I would write a post like this. Not in all my days.
