The uS does have enough oil to feed itself, but the goal of the owners is not to provide benefits to the people, since the people are viewed as the enemy. The goal of the oilmen is to put an effective total global monopoly in place on the supply and refinement of oil. This is why the russians aren't permitted to have enough refineries but must export the crued and re-import the refined products. It's called interdependence, so that no nation ever has the capability within its borders of making war against the desires of the monopolists and becoming free. That's why all the US national guard units and equipment have been decimated in the past few years. It's why fertilizer silos in farm towns are no longer permitted to contain ammonium nitrate. It used to be that the citizens in the uS had ample means to defend themselves. They're pretty much defenseless now from a materiel standpoint. If the brain is man's best true weapon, in this regard I'd estimate that uS citizens are for the most part dis-armed.

The green movement was funded by the oil monopolists themselves, to ensure that no further exploration / production would occur, thus capping supplies in a world of ever-increasing demand. So the greenpeaceniks' work actually helps the position of the monopolists by throttling the supply side, which is the oilmen's goal. Elliminating competition is also part of the picture of obtaining a global monopoly, which is why some middle-east supplying countries have come under attack, or are very soon about to come under attack. Some say as early is April 6. If they were permitted to exist as oil exporters, that would be unbridled competition, which is a no-no to the monopolist coterie. That's how I'd view it, it's just good business sense.
