Wow, that's really interesting. She does make some good points, even if I don't agree with her on all details.
It is a clash of civilizations and mentalities, yes, but it is still a religious clash, since it is the religion of Islam that creates this clash between all who are not Islamic. It is a religion of animosity and the sword, not peace.
I dislike the term "martyr" being used to describe the suicide bombers. They killed themselves and others for their beliefs. I prefer to define a martyr as a person who is put to death by others for their adherence to their religious beliefs, but does not purposely kill themself or anyone else. This is a fundamental difference. A Christian martyr, for example, is thrown to the lions, or burned at the stake for refusing to renounce their beliefs. They may be shot or bombed when they chose to go to church instead of staying at home. But they don't want to kill others who refuse to believe. The way they try to convert others is through education and discussion, and through helping meet their needs, through relationship and through prayer. This is how many charities and much humanitarian work has been started. Christians provide food, clothing, medical care and education for people, even if they don't convert, which is quite the opposite to strapping bombing.
