Dear Ashley,
I am not sure I know how to answer your question
properly, but here is another way one can look at this
situation.
We can set aside the "charity work" or
"trying-to-fix-the-third-world-countries" mentality
for a minute and try to see this kind of work in
another light.
Every job that exists, whether it's a school teacher
to being a doctor, exists because there is a need for
it in the community. Someone out there has need to
have their car repaired, so there are mechanics to fix
your car for you. We want to wear clothing so someone
opens a clothing store, which then needs sales people,
etc. We want an education, so there are schools with
administrators and teachers and janitors, etc....all
this, and more, to fill those needs in our communities
as well as personal lives.
In those third world countries, they too have the need
or desire, if you prefer, for education, health care,
automobiles that run smoothly, etc and so forth. But
they lack the teachers, doctors, to provide that need
within their own local economies. So people like me,
get paid to go over there and help provide that
service...the same paid services we have here to
provide for good lives within out communities.
We are not trying to "fix" anything so much as just
make a living, by providing needed services in
different parts of the world. It is one way of
generating income and abundance in our lives. In turn,
it just so happens that people are helped and blessed
as the outcome! Common needs being met, that we
sometimes take for granted here since we have such an
abundance of it in this country (U.S. for our overseas
readers that may be reading)
Does that help to see things from a slightly different
angle than the "lack" mentality? I'm not sure I'm much
help.

We are all at different levels of understanding and
maturity in our path in this life. Some are "getting
it" and others are a long way off from that point. All
I know is that one thing I have learned is that
compassion and understanding towards my fellow human
travelers goes a long way.
I may see the drama or crisis a friend is going
through from a more positive aspect, but I also know
as a human being, that I was once in her shoes, and I
*do* know what she's feeling. One does not have to
play into the dramas, and one can be a strong example
of a better way to think and live. But I think it is
good to remind ourselves to do it in a spirit love and
compassion otherwise we just come off looking
self-righteous and holier-than-thou.
Bless you!
