Chris,
I agree with you that straight fasting is a much quicker and more efficient method to health and I have done 3+ week long water only fasts in the past with excellent results. I just wasn't able to get past 2-3 days each time that I tried lately. I kept obsessing about food and would cave in. I wasn't hungry -- I just couldn't stop thinking about what I wanted to eat. This just left me feeling bad about myself for my lack of will power.
Initially, this was only going to be a one-day only fast. I told myself that surely I could get through ONE day of fasting for pete's sake. One day was easy. There was no pressure and I did not obsess over food. I knew that I could eat tomorrow -- so it was very easy to get through the day. The next day I did eat and thought that I would like to do another one-day fast. I was concerned that this would be unhealthy, because I was always under the impression that fasting needed to be at least 3 days to be beneficial. This was when I began researching and found out about alternate day fasting. The information that I found out was the complete opposite of what I expected to find.
Now, here I am at day 102 and absolutely loving it. I was only trying to lose some weight -- the health benefits and the pain reduction have been an added bonus. The day on day off fasting was difficult initially but got easier after about a month. I have to remind myself to eat on my eating day because I am not really all that hungry most of the time.
Congratulations to you on healing your body. The last time that I did a long term fast I felt great for about 6 months afterwards. I would have loved to do another one but I just couldn't find the will power to get past a few days. I am a big proponent of all types of fasting. I remember reading a paper by a cancer researcher once and when he was asked what he would do if he ever got cancer (as in what type of chemo would he do) he replied, none -- he would go on a strict fast. His response tells it all....
