Hello to all and I am new here. Ok here is the deal.........I have had tmj for 17 years. I had a arthosentices (I hope I spelled that right) twice on my left side and once on my right. That was about 15 years ago. Done fine til just past few years. I have changed my entire lifestyle around this, soft foods, massages, moist heating pad etc. and nothing is helping. Even tried a splint aka drool device and nothing. Went to Duke and had a MRI done and doctor there said my left mandiblur (hope i spelled it right) top has been wore down almost half way. I could see it myself as well. Dr. McGraw wanted to go in and see if he could repair the joint to stabalize the disk. So then my lovely insurance says they do not cover any out of state services and people with TMJ know all too well how insurance companies can be with TMJ services....a bigger pain than the condition itsself! So then I went to MCV. My first visit was a RX. I was fine with that. Second visit I requested to see a SPECIFIC doctor. I had read a lot about him on the net and he looked pretty prominent and thought to myself I needed to see him and get his opinion on what I should do. Went today, February 27th 2008 and he wasn't there! I could nto belive my ears! I traveled from 350 miles away and spent a lot of money to see him only to find out he was out of town at a conference. Was a ticked off!!!!!!!!!!!! So I see the same resident. Again a RX. So this time I confront him with finding a way to stabalize the disk. Well all he wanted to do is give me a muscle relaxer and send me on my merry way. I explained to him I understand my muscles have a big part to play in the disk but does not address the issue of attempting to fix the joint/disk so I don't have to take a RX rest of my life for it. So he gives me my RX and sends me on my merry way. I didn't want to argue with him cause I was irritated the doc wasn't even there I was scheduled to see. Took my RX and went on my merry way.
Let me clear a few things up before I go any further. I know I will never be 100% again. I would love to be atleast 50% again. ALL of the tests I have had points to the joint itsself being in abnormal and moderate to severe condition. I have become a cd burner and kept all of my MRI scans and such. If I can avoid taking a RX I would rather have surgery. To me that is more logical at this point due to the material facts I have of the joint condition.
My question for you all.......................or anyone who can help me, thinks can help me, wants to chat with me, or whatever it is......WHERE ON THIS GREEN EARTH CAN I FIND A GOOD TMJ DOC? I am in a desperate search for one and feel as if my resources are getting smaller. I live in Southwestern Virginia. At this point I will travel as far as Georgia or Memphis to see a doctor who will LISTEN to me and not someone who wants a repeat customer (which I know all docs want but still...one who puts a effort forth). I find myself becoming slowly depressed about the situation. I feel as if I am screaming and noone can hear me. If ANYONE can help I would squeeze your neck. You can email me or reach me via yahoo messenger as haulinazzgirl.
THANK YOU for your help and sorry I ranted but I am at a point were I am desperate to find a doctor who will help me.
