There is a movie from the 1960's about war called "The Americanization of Emily" where James Garner makes many philosophical comments about the war (not anti-war exactly, but about heroism and cowardice). For myself, logic ends when talking about war (I believe that only peace and harmony is logical, evil is ILLOGICAL), so don't expect me to be able to say anything sensible about war, I simply don't have that ability, but everything James Garner says was VERY interesting to me about morality. This is one of his conversations (his others are MUCH better). He was dating Julie Andrews in the movie and when they meet her mother, he defends cowardice as humane.

About This Video

From "The Americanization of Emily," dir. Arthur Hiller, screenplay Paddy Chayefsky. Set in the UK during WW2 immediately before D-Day. James Garner plays Cmdr. Charles Madison, and Julie Andrew plays Emily Barham, a driver in the carpool for Allied brass. Cmdr. Madison is a "dog-robber," a provisioner who can get anything for his superior, Admiral Jessup. A self-proclaimed coward, he nonetheless charms Miss Barham, a young woman who usually falls for (and sleeps with) young men going off to die. In this scene he meets Emily's mother, played by Joyce Grenfell, who also sentimentalizes the war dead, and he defends cowardice as more humane and realistic than heroism.

The U.S. military is very shorthanded now and has raised their age limit to 42 years old. They are also accepting more recruits of 'moral terpitude' (criminals, felons) to fill the ranks. A draft has been considered for years and is now seriously thought to be likely after the election. Will future generations thank us for the gift of life?

If you ever have the chance to see that movie, don't pass it by, I watched it 3 times just to LEARN more (very philosophical).

Modern wars are not like wars 40 years ago. Modern wars are all about oil money and more wreckless in killing large numbers of civilians. Our thinking about today's wars needs adjusting.

McCain mentioned 100 years in Iraq, and Bush mentioned a 3rd world war.
