As I was growing up, Twilight Zone was my favorite show (because it was about irony and poetic justice). Yes, I did have a terrible childhood. Poetic justice was always a fantasy of mine. People laugh and smile while they perform their despicable deeds because they are truly happy that their plans are working out, but in the end, poetic justice shows them their fate, and then they see that all the time they were laughing, the joke was ON THEM.

But Rod Serling's creative mind was also, in many ways prophetic. Space is being explored today with the intention of colonizing, it's called "TERRAFORMING" (making another planet's environment compatible to human life).

Embedding was disabled by request, but there was an episode called "Death Ship" that was about exploration in order to colonize other planets. The following caption is about the episode.

This episode is based on the short story "Death Ship" by Richard Matheson. The story was first published in Fantastic Story Magazine (March, 1953). It was later included in Matheson's Shock! collection (Dell, 1961). The miniature spaceship prop was the same one used in the classic 1956 film Forbidden Planet.

All Twilight Zone episodes were a comfort to me (I didn't consciously realize why at the time). There was one that seems to parallel our use of the bible. We tend to read it in a very predatory manner (and recieve poetic justice for doing so). In the episode, aliens come to earth with a book that is very special to them. The earthlings try to decipher the book and are partially successful in a few days (decipher the title only). Encouraged that they are friendly, many people go back with the aliens to visit their planet. This continues for some time (even though all the visitors to their planet have extended their stay). Then one day, the rest of the book is deciphered.

We read our special book in a very alien manner, preying on each other. We isolate each verse so that we can accuse and convict each other of even the smallest little violation of a "code" that we have chosen to make the other person deserving of a penalty (whether that penalty be shame, guilt, humilation or intimidation...we "cook each other's goose"). We find scapegoats and feel comfortable thinking that evil is caused by the devil (he can only TEMPT) or we blame the wrongdoing on others, and find ways to displace responsibility for our own actions, but we are the predators (according to each one's heart, but we must overcome "human nature").
