Olive leaf extract, which has been shown in clinical research to be effective against HIV, should be investigated for the treatment of Extremely Drug Resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB).
Olive leaf extract has been receiving more attention recently, after clinical research done at the New York University School of Medicine found the natural extract to be effective against HIV without being toxic to uninfected cells. It was also shown to have a synergistic effect with existing antiretrovirals, and is reportedly being used to reduce the side effects of HAART (Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy).
Olive leaf extract has a similar antiviral action to many antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), as both a potent protease and reverse transcriptase inhibitor. The New York University School of Medicine research found that olive leaf extract inhibits both HIV acute infection and replication.
