From acetic acid, cholesterol is biosynthesized. What is acetic acid ? Ever hear of vinegar ? Of course. If you drink alcoholic beverages, the body oxidizes the ethanol to acetic acid. So, it can rightfully be said, that drinking a beer provides the body with a necessary building block for cholesterol synthesis.

The synth begins with acetic acid, which, with coenzyme A yelds acetyl coenzyme A, a thiolester, that undergoes a biological version of a Claisen condensation, to afford acetoacetyl coenzymeA. Acetoacetyl coenzyme A reacts with another molecule of itself in an aldol condensation to give beta-hydroxy-beta-methylglutaryl CoA. The thiolester group is reduced, first to a hydroxy aldehydo acid, then to a dihydroxy acid, called mevalonic acid. Mevalonic acid is converted, in two steps, into 5-pyrophosphomevalonic acid, which is itself phosphorylated to yield 3-phospho-5-pyrophosphomevalonic acid, which then undergoes decarboxylative elimination to afford isopentenyl pyfophosphate. Isopentenyl pyrophosphate is the biological “isoprene unit” and it undergoes isomerization to gamma, gamma – dimethylallyl pyrophosphate, that getscoupled with isopentenyl pyrophosphate to yield geranyl pyrophosphate. By successive alkylation of isopentenyl pyrophosphate, farnesyl pyrophosphate is formed, which, by reductive coupling gives presqualene alcohol pyrophosphate, which is then converted into squalene. (Squalene is present also in shark oil.) It is a precursor to a wide range of steroids. Squalene is first cyclicized to lanosterol, and lanosterol is converted into cholesterol by the loss of three methyl groups at C4, C14, the isomeriazation of one double bond, and the reduction of another double bond. Beautiful. Of course, the digestion of some carbohydrates yields acetate also, so the best way to avoid cholesterol is to not eat anything at all. I have no reference for the foregoing, but one can undoubtedly piece it together independently if they so aim.

The whole cholesterol scare is one big lump for the televitzion masses to swallow. Boooo !! The cause of arterial plaque is excessive calcium, which forms cholesterol complexes, just as does DHT with zinc, that makes ones hair fall out (alopecia). Interested parties know that calcium is the culprit in arterial plaques, not chloesterol, which is an essential building block of the body's steroids. Excessive calcium causes cholesterol to precipitate and be deposited in the arteries.
