Aw'cmon, quit braggin'~! :p
The reality IS that there are/were plenty of people
content to be part of a viable tax base which is needed
to support schools, roads, etc. They never get filthy
rich, but they live their lives enriched by the joy of
work and the satisfaction that "making do" can provide.
One guy I am thinking of who is a PERFECT example of
this was a guy named Buckshot. He and his wife, Vicky,
raised up a huge family and ran a sanitation business.
Perhaps a fleet of 4 trucks was all. He lived in a tiny
house and come a Sunday, you'd see him and his family
all crowded out in the yard cutting up and hugging and
fixing their dinner over a barbeque. He never had much
ambition but to put all his kids through college and
to keep Miss Vicky happy. He was generous with his
hugs and smiles and was loved by everyone. He confided
to me that he would rather send his extra money to others
and funded more than a few scholarships for those he did
consider poor. When he passed, the church could barely
hold those who came to say goodbye...He never had central
air, but considered himself a rich man...
Back in 1986, I was standing in front of an empty building,
used to be the old Sears building back in the day, and the
Masonic Hall before that in the 1800's. I said, hey, lets
put something in there...anything...and so we did...an
antique & collectible store. We did not make a "killing"
but it supported 3 families and was a fine place where
people gathered and deals were made. The mayor came for
lunch frequently, and at Christmas, ALL the politicians
came to our annual Christmas party. We made a ton of memories
there and were part of the restoration of the old downtown.
The great thing was we worked for ourselves and had a good
life...never getting rich, not getting poor, and being
part of a community. It closed two years ago as the market
for collectibles has been replaced by different values and
cheap reproductions. Still, the point is that we were not
rich, but we were risktakers and investors too, just in
a small viable way which also enabled us to live RICH
lives. I think we have always been more geared to stress
free living. For many years, we published a historical
magazine which had a small faithful following and which
also provided not only a living, but a way to go canoing
every afternoon...ggg. I suppose it is just different
strokes for different folks. I probably would have been
the kind of risk-taker who made shine in the back hollar
and hunted 'sang and lived to watch the sun and moon rise.
Those are still my goals, not to make shine but to watch
the sun and moon rise...and while I make little, I am
still debt-free and save more than most folks..
Well, if you get tired of getting "soaked", send that thar'
fancy dancy hot tub of yours over my way. I've tried them
out and would like one but for now, a soak in my bathtub
is like heaven to me...ggg.
blessings,
Zoe
