I like Mercola a lot MOST of the time, even though I think he is a shameless promoter and a bit of an extremist when it comes to some items such as having no grains whatsoever in the diet (there ARE healthy grains, especially non GMO sprouted ones).

However, when it comes to colloidal silver, in my opinion Mercola plainly wimped out.  I guess there was no money in it for him in any of the huge lit of products he hawks.

"Colloidal silver has also become very popular on the Internet, and you must be very careful to avoid counterfeit, sub-par, or contaminated versions.

Because there are risks involved, I’d encourage anyone thinking of using colloidal silver to do so only under the care of a knowledgeable natural health clinician."

Give me a break!  It is good advice to be careful to avoid sub-par versions, but mankind has been using and taking silver for thousands of years WITHOUT the supervision of health care clinicians and the only instances of silver in just about any form causing the blue skin condition Argyria (which IS reversible) has been when the silver was consumed in huge quantities for very long periods, and usually that silver has been home-made ionic silver contaminated with salt, silver nitrate, or else silver that uses animal protein to artificially suspend the tiny particles of silver and call it a colloid.

The daily recommended dose of colloidal silver (which actually contains mere parts per million of silver) is a couple of teaspoons per day for maintenance use (if desired) and up to a few ounces or so per day for tough bugs and systemic conditions.

I have been away for a few weeks recently gone and was without silver or hardly any other supplements for a period of a few weeks and I returned with a pretty bad bug.  I am drinking half a bottle of the best colloidal silver a day, along with garlic, echinacea, and large amounts of vitamin C, a herbal upper respiratory mix and a couple of tablespoons of concentrated oleander extract daily (which I have not taken for a couple of months until now).  It is a very nasty bug, I can feel it and I know my body.  I am certain that I had not begun the silver and herbals I would very likely be seeking professional care by now.

Mercola is right when he says that the best plan is to have a diet and lifestyle that helps keep most bugs at bay in the first place, and you are right when you say let the body recover naturally.  I do not consider herbal supplements and plant derived minerals and vitamins unnatural however - and the reality is that, due to lifestyle, contaminants, our depleted soils, or a combination, few of us are so healthy that we keep all bugs at bay at all times.  The minor ones can probably be handled with good nutrition and rest (and the immune reaction that results is indeed a healthy thing - it has been proven that those who catch a cold now and then actually live longer than those who do not), but some bugs out there, like the one I have, may well require a bit of help from nature beyond just readily available food, lots of good liquids, juices, rest, etc.

I think that is exactly why nature put such herbs, vitamins and minerals in the world for us (or put another way, why we evolved or adapted to be able to take advantage of what nature has to offer).  Man has been using nature to feed, sustain and heal himself for thousands of years.  And I think that a plan of using food, lifestyle, stress removal, proper rest and environmental concerns first and then herbs and supplements second is in keeping with what nature has provided.

Them ore I learn and acquire wisdom, the more I think I am coming towards your point of view in many areas.  However, for most people the amount and quality of food they are able to consume in any 2000-2500 calorie per day diet is not going to come close to providing all of the vitamins, minerals and trace minerals needed for optimum health and longevity.

An excellent book to read about the subject is "The Root of All Disease".
