Very good post.

The main reasons that the pharmaceutical companies have not jumped on oleander is that the aqueous oleander extract is based on a natural plant and a remedy that dates back perhaps thousands of years - the only unique thing which enabled Ozelle Pharmaceuticals to obtain their initial patent was the lyphilization (freeze drying) and subsequent re-constituting of the oleander extract with medical grade distilled water as an injectible drug - hardly enough to consider the patent to be strong enough to stand up to a good patent challenge.

Since that patent, it has been widely recognized that taking the extract orally is equally as effective as injecting it and that further lessens the appeal. The topper is likely the fact that it can be made at home about as easily as a large pot of beans.  What a pharmaceutical company might do is find a way to either synthesize the oleander or else uniquely isolate it's primary active compound, the cardiac glycoside oleandrin.  However, that will then present another set of problems in that the lab created synthetic or unique isolate will not be nearly as effective as the aqueous extract one can make at home, because oleander, like most of nature, works synergistically and there is no single compound alone that is nearly as effective as the effects of various of the combinations of compounds found in oleander (thus far, over 500 different compounds have been identified).

The abomination known as the bogus drug Xenavex provided chilling proof of what happens when the long chain polysacharides in oleander are not included.  Such polar (water soluable) compounds tend to precipitate out in an ethanol extraction process, and that is what is used in making the "serio neriolini" Russian heart and vertigo medication - which was fine for treating heart conditions and vertigo because the non-polar compounds, including oleandrin and other cardiac glycosides that cross-assay with digitalis/digoxin were retained.  When the same extract was used against cancer it was far less effective than the Anvirzel it intended to compete with.

Sadly, a very good internet friend of mine was talked into switching from Anvirzel to the bogus Xenavex with fatal results.  Anvirzel, the aqueous oleander extract, was the only thing he had found that actually shrunk and eliminated his tumors, and believe me, he tried just about every alternative treatment and substance in the world.  But the evil one who devised the Xenavex scheme told him lies about the makers of Anvirzel and had others play the roles of doctors to convince him to switch to the "far more powerful" Xenavex.  His non small cell cancer tumors returned and never stopped growing until he died.

These same people sent hired thugs posing as US Marshalls after me trying to silence me when I exposed them.  Then later, the main mastermind sent emails to various drug oriented groups telling them that my Yahoo Group was really a front for the greatest drug ever invented - that all they had to do was go join the group, make the oleander, mix it 50/50 with vodka and then mainline it for the greatest rush of their life, which would likely have been instantly fatal, and it was only luck that tipped me off in time to keep someone from being killed.

I hope that the sorry bastards who lured my friend to his death and tried to lure others to their deaths rot in hell for eternity!

Compared to that whole episode, you think that arguing with a hardhead on here is really a big deal to me?

Pffffft.
