I've used these machines infrequently over the past 8 years with positive results. NEVER EVER has my practitioner uttered the words "cleanse", "detoxification", "purification", or any word which would have been meant to suggest to me anything similar to what Dr. Staggs has come out and spoken against in her interview. I would like to mention one point: When I first became aware of this concept, the machine was referred to as a B.E.F.E. (pronounced 'beefy'). Here's the website:
http://www.q2spa.com/

This abbreviation stood for "Bio Electric Field Enhancer", a vague term which gives a clear definition of what the machine does: it enhances the energy fields of the body, also know as "MERIDIANS". Forgive now, while I quote from the Dr. Staggs interview:

"We must also remember that on the soles of our feet we can find a large number of reflex points that correspond to specific organs or certain parts of our body (this is the principle of reflexology). Also, we find in this area the beginning of the MERIDIAN flow lines that have been outlined for us in Chinese medicine, used by acupuncturists and previously by allopathic medicine. Therefore, any kind of stimuli - be it mechanical, luminous, electromagnetic or simply electric - in one way or another causes a reaction in each bodily system, organ or corresponding body area reflected on the sole of the feet."

My conclusion: I've had positive results from the foot baths, accupuncture, reflexology, and reiki, so I'm in no position to dispute this practice.

I think it's unfortunate that unscrupulous people never just presented this device for exactly what does: enhancement of the body's Fields aka Meridians. Other information out about balancing the Meridians has suggested that when they are more properly in tune, detoxification becomes a benefit that one's body can perform on it's own. Personally, I think the selling point went wrong when one company realized they could sell more machines for more money if they used the word "detox".
