Hi,
I think that taking the matter into your hands is not wise since you (are me) are not medical doctors, however sometimes it may be necessary.
However in the case of hypothyroidism, in my opinion you should never overmedicate yourself with thyroxine, at least before trying for at least 6 months all the other options.
There are many recommendations you can look into in this and other forums:
1. Consume more of foods that are good for the thyroid and less of "goitrogenic" foods that interfere with its functions.
2. take Iodine as suggested above (if in powder form, follow closely the suggestions! if it's 1/4 teaspoon a day do not overmedicate to get faster results!!!)
3. How about a full spectrum strong multivitamin\mineral supplement that will help your body cope with all known and unknown problems that you may have. Always recommended IMHO.
I thought I had hypothyroid problems for about 6 months and tried all these that didn't work, until I realized I have adrenal fatigue and my thyroid is functioning properly. In my case it helped to REDUCE the thyroid medication (along with other supplements for the adrenals) so have it cease being a burden on the adrenal glands (it makes them work faster, stronger, and they collapse).
good luck.
