I think that what Jim Humble says here is accurate. I have used sodium chlorite for a while, and have studied its action in the past, and read material from other practioners who have used it. But, I was always under the impression that the great benefits that I and othersfelt from it were from oxygenation.

After reading Humble's book, though, it really rang true; the oxygen actually acts as a transport mechanism for the chlorine dioxide molecule, by fooling the body into thinking it is transporting oxygen. After transport, it is the cleansing action of the chlorine dioxide itself that goes after pathogens so strongly.

This is the same action I think that occurs outside the body, when ClO2 is used in water purification applications, in vitro tests against pathogens, or for food or other cleansing applications. It is the chlorine dioxide molecule that is so potent, rather than the oxygen that is released as a product of the reaction.

So, with this understanding, ClO2 theoretically becomes a more powerful cleansing agent than other oxygen therapies. It still delivers oxygen as they do, but it also has an extremely virulent anti-pathogenic agent (chlorine dioxide) which is basically the same one used by the body itself.

I can say that in my own experience, having used (and continuing to use) H2O2, CS, ozone, iodine, etc in various ways ... that Clo2 is a fantastic additional weapon in the fight for balance in the body.
