I have never had a weight problem and can eat anything, but in our family we have skinny and fat people. Before the second world war there were fat people and thin people, but after the war most people were thin. So to me the theory that once you add fat cells they don't go away is the first myth, a load of rubbish.
Secondly, I noticed when working in a prison as an RN that inmates treated with tetracycline for Acne also lost weight, which would suggest a bacteria, probably in the digestive tract that the Antibiotic got rid of.
Thirdly, I have also nursed fat people to reduce weight prior to surgery, and their food intake was limited except for bread and milk and the pounds fell off, which sort of blows the skimmed milk and bread limitation theories out of the water.
Fourthly, when the anti viral drugs came in my son in law was given them as he had the flu the week his daughter was born, and he lost weight permanently, which would suggest there is also a viral cause of weight gain.
Lastly, when I lived on the farm, animals were given Antibiotics and steroids to increase milk production and make beef cattle bigger. We separately raised beef for ourselves without these additives and the animals were about a third smaller.
As we eat the meat, now commonly raised this way, perhaps these drugs also contribute to the fact that some Antibiotics no longer work, and the weight gain drugs have entered our bodies and taken up residence through the food chain.
After the war food was rationed until 1953 in England, but when that ceased and the economy improved we couldn't get enough of all the things we had never had or only in very limited supplies. I used to go to our local chinese restaurant with a friend who knew the owner and we ate free and could sit down and eat a dinner for four all by myself. My friends who have gained weight eat like birds, they do not pig out like we did, yet continue to gain weight. We fell on all the new food like peopl coming off the TV show Survivor.
My conclusion through my life (I am 63 and female) and my nursing is that one day it will be discovered that obesity is not our fault. After all, treatment for weight loss is a multimillion dollar industry, why would they want to find a cure.
I compare it to the common cold. If a cure was announced the local drug store would empty half their shelves.
I would like to see pressure on research facilities to investigate viral and bacterial causes, and pressure on producers of meat to ban the use of drugs to make the animals fatter.
I have heard all the excuses about binge eating, depression, greediness, food obsession etc and I am unimpressed. I think people who get fat get depressed.
I am also tired of hearing that life style is to blame. You'd think in my day we all exercised vigourasly, and never sat around. Wrong!!! We were a lazy lot who sat in school all day and hated gym, stuffed our faces with anything we could get our hands on and sat in the pub all night drinking like fish. Although we didn't have computers, we sat around for hours chatting, reading, playing board games, knitting and no, we did not go for long walks, we all wore 3 or 4 inch stilletos, and you don't walk miles in those. We all had cars, and hardly walked accross the street!!
I am not saying exercise and healthy eating is bad for people, it helps to give you a nice figure and keeps the old body working. But all of you who are accused of being fat because you are lazy and greedy, think about what I have said. I honestly do not think the blame is yours, and I sincerely hope you will think about what I have said.
