No apology necessary, Trysten. what I wrote could only truly be expressed in one way (somethings need to be expressed in a "gut"/serious way or they aren't really being said at all).
Children want to be GOOD "FOR" the (YOU, not "propriety"/goodness) parent/guardian, children want to do what's right, but they can't if there's no hard and fast REQUIREMENT, if there's only a REQUEST for them to do what they are SUPPOSED to do ANYWAY, they can only be OBEDIENT and CONVENIENT TO the parent/guardian (this doesn't show LOVE for YOU and your approval of them will not show LOVE for them). What matters to them is LOVE (they SENSE love). They are VERY sensitive to "love". They want to be good for YOU, not for "goodness sake" ("goodness sake" is cold, YOU are warm).
Don't show approval with meaningless "sticker" awards, those mock his self-worth. Let him HELP you clean the kitchen sink, hand you the sponge, etc. Involve him in YOUR life.
