From only my take on this - there are multiple levels of existance. This material earth is but one of them. Our inner spiritual nature has a need for further refinement, for growth. To do this it requires experiences, some of which will be found on the earth physical plane. When our bodies no longer serve us our spiritual self goes to a place/home that is limited by the level of spiritual growth that we have attained. At some point we have the desire to progress to a still higher level, but to do so we must 'learn/grow' more, and that often necessitates that we come back to earth, into the game, to have new experiences.

Before we come back we plan the challenges that we will face. So when crummy situations happen to us the trick is not to blame others (who may be to blame) but to ask what we can learn from the situation, how can we make things somehow better, what opportunities are there for enhancing my own growth and that of others. When we leave our current bodies we go through a 'life review' in which we evaluate how 'good and bad' we were in this life. We feel the pain that we have caused others and so try to forgive those who have caused us pain.

It has been told to me that if most of us on earth could remember where we came from we would never voluntarily choose to be here - that in comparison this earth life seems like a hell.
