If the child did it maliciously, he should be punished, but since they know he did it accidentally, I don't feel he should be fined millions of dollars, and taken from his parents , becoming a ward of the State.
I think this is an atrocious negative way to ruin this child's life forever without doing anything constructive. What he should be made to do now is to redeem his actions by being made to volunteer and help the fire department in some capacity, as well as to take classes on fire prevention, etc. He should be directed in giving back to the community in some way . This will not only be constructive for everyone involved, it will help this child heal as well. This child apparantly is not at peace at the damage that he caused. I'm sure if he had a chance to do it over again, he would gladly.
The prisons are spilling out with convicts who truly do have malicious attitudes. This is not the case with this boy, so why add one more person into the prison system, who will be bullied and probably killed in prison because he isn't like the rest of them.
Why mess his life forever out of vindictivness for what happened. It would be different maybe, if he did it intentionally, but he did it on accident. Let something constructive come of his mistake for society as well as for a lesson for himself to be made to give back in some way.
