"I'm one of those people who is chronically constipated and I take magnesium oxide (Twinlabs) every day just to be regular. It doesn't matter what I eat, and I drink a ton of water so don't bother mentioning those things. :) I know you're just trying to be helpful."
I was chronically constipated, too. I didn't become regular until I cut gluten out of my diet entirely, then started making up for the stuff I lacked. I take a good amount of magnesium regularly, which calmed my nerves & really encouraged regular BMs (daily, at least, whereas before, I was chronically constipated). Then I started taking vitamin B12 sublingually, and it's fixing my sleep cycles (feel far more rested & need less sleep) and eliminated my freako sporadic fatigue. I think that's encouraged my bowels as well. Getting rid of gluten + adding magnesium, I totally eliminated breast soreness & nearly all cramping soreness from my menstrual periods.
I tried cleansing at first, but if you're deficient in basic nutrients, I think it's extremely hard to cleanse. I try to get as much of my nutrition from nutrient-dense food as possible, but I've found some things (magnesium, zinc, selenium, iodine, vitamin B12) I need a lot more of, and some of those (mag, B12) don't really have toxic effects in excess, or will work themselves out (e.g. diarrhea from mag). I needed a LOT of magnesium to start noticing the changes. I may not have purchased the most absorbable form, but at least it's working. I hate taking Epsom Salts for my magnesium, so I don't do it.
It took a lot of experimentation for me to figure this stuff out. All the "bowel cleansing" I was doing would only work for a little while, then stop. It was a constant battle, switching methods, etc. So I gave up on it, until I feel it's the right time.
