Bloodroot works by killing small amounts of the tissue that it touches - a good thing if you are using it topically on a skin problem, but a bad thing if you swallow it. It is one of the few medicinal herbs that should really not be taken internally - even American Indians rarely used it internally, and then in minute doses to induce vomiting.
