I'm tempted to say protozoa may be a part of the problem. I have them in my prostate, which is supposed to be unheard of, but it is a fact. If you have something in there, it may not cause too much discomfort, but could have immuno-suppressive consquences.
The details of this are complicated, so suffice to say, macrophages cannot do the right job. There may be releasing of bioactive metabolites from local cells which cause homeostasis fluctuations. This could have effect on prostate, testes [and related organs] saliva glands, parotid glands, [sometimes the thyroid] sinuses, and lacrymals. If there is a heavy infestation, the lymph glands could become over-worked.
I also have mycoplasma bacteria which may be central to all of this.
I would go straight for research on this one if I were you.
