I dont beleive there was an autopsy. But I do know from reading his first book years ago that he already had heart disease and was extremely obese before he came up with the Atkins diet! His practiced included heart patients and the obese which after years of failure using standard medical techniques he started looking into alternatives that he based his diet on! There is lot of misinformation out there about his diet including out right lies ,but if you visit one of their internet support groups you will find many who have benefitted and many who have cured heart disease and diabetis. Also you will find that complex carbs where very much a part of the diet and that only the induction stage is extreme , but its just the first few weeks that one has to maintain extreme carb restrictions. The end version does imitate the paleo diet but does not stress raw meat.
Atkins was 72 when he died, he was very active and a positive type fellow ,I saw him on the Larry King show live a few months before his death and he appeared in great shape for a 72 year old.
I remember he challenged the American Diabetis Association on the show for their failure to cure diabetis, a disease which he felt was induced by a poor diet SAD ,high in junk food. He also exposed the myth that manmade oleo margarines are superior to butter and the other low calorie diet myths.
People dont have to agree with his diet ,but I think there is too much misinformation surrounding his death and his diet.
Quoting his enemies, which he had many, is rather unfair considering he is not here any more to defend himself. It also does the public a diservice to promote these lies.
Enough said ,I know this thread was not meant to be an Atkins debate just wanted
to try and help clarify a few things. Sorry for my intrusion.
