Yes we need sodium for that too, but (depending on adrenal/kidney function) the body holds onto sodium easier than potassium doesnt it? No, I wasn't saying they were interchangeable but a kind of exchange takes place. When there's loss/deficiency of one, the body will try to compensate by moving another in its place, thats not the same as saying they perform the same functions. So loss of intracellular potassium leads to intracellular sodium retention to act as a buffer. When sodium moves into a cell, it takes a hydrogen atom with it. The higher the hydrogen concentration the higher the acidity of the cell which has a knock-on effect on cell oxygenation, metabolism etc.
> Yes, alkalinity is an attribute, it is in the nature of these substances.... You don't view them through the spectrum of acid/alkaline and imagine that tells you what what the spectrum of their biochemical effects are.
I'm not suggesting its just about acid/alkaline or its as simple as just taking an alkalising supplements otherwise we'd all be healthy by now. Plus some people are sensitive to certain mineral supplements eg potassium. With the health problems we have with adrenal problems etc things are more complicated as we're more sensitive and maybe less able to maintain homeostasis or process certain supplements.
> When you eat for health, you eat to get adequate nutrients that your body needs. You can't mix and match alkaline nutrients, or acidic nutrients, to fulfill some criterion of 60% alkaline/40% acidic and think that will give you good health.
Yes at the end of the day its all about nutrients and everyone has to work out what diet suits them, depending on how well their digestion is, etc. Monitoring ph levels is a good idea (not that I ever do it). I feel much better on a 60/40 ratio or even higher (ie more alkaline), high in veggies. Unfortunately can't take fruit and if I eat too much protein, it makes me irritable. Overall the benefits are apart from higher minerals and vits, more antioxidants, fibre, prebiotics.
BTW for kidneys, I did a kidney cleanse once (the Andreas Moritz one) pre chelation. I found it quite cleansing, maybe even too powerful though I didnt have any serious kidney issues at the time apart from frequent urination. He says its good for dissolving all types of stones... uric acid, oxalic, phosphate and amino acid. There are a number of herbs in the mix....marjoram, cats claw, comfrey root, fennel seed, chicory herb, uva ursi, hydrangea root, gravel root, marshmallow root, golden rod herb.
Anyway hope you're fairing up.
