I never used the phrase alkalize or die, but in a sense its true...if your body remains in a constant acidic state without replacing minerals...you increase the odds of getting a degenerative disease and probably die sooner than otherwise.

> With everything you just described in fast foods, do you really think that the problem with these foods is that they lead to excess acidity?

Not the only problem with them no, but junk food is high in phosphates, excess Sugar and bad fats all of which puts extra stress on the kidneys and increases excretion of calcium, magnesium and potassium.

> The body can regulate pH balance pretty easily (within reason)

Blood ph yes but how does it do this? To maintain the critical blood ph without sufficient mineral stores the body has to 'give' somewhere. People end up with digestive, urinary, bone degeneration etc. Otherwise why do people develop osteoporosis, arthritis, cystitis, even depression, cancer etc? All these are affected by ph balance within the cells.

> If I had an acid diet of meats, whole grains, plums, legumes, and cranberry juice, would I be better off than someone whose diet was equally acid from eating fast foods?

I don't know! ;) It's too general a question to answer and would depend on lots of factors.
