I bet your health teacher also tells you to stay hydrated by drinking water or electrolyte drinks before during and after a workout too. Good advice maybe but not the only good advice around and we have knowledge and experience here that he likely has no experience of.
Yesterday I ran 8 kilometres with the sun beating down on me after going two days without food or water. In spite of the extended period of aerobic exercise, losing water through sweating and panting open mouthed the whole way while the sun beat down on me- my throat stayed hydrated the whole way. And I am still a good 25 kilos above what I would consider my fittest weight. I was exhausted by the end, to the point where I had to walk up the last couple of hills and the last 50-100 metres to make it home. However by the time I'd finished my stretching my body had recovered enough for me to know I still needed no food or water, and after not too long I was restless and walking about again.
There can be no doubt that I was in fat-burning mode during my runs, and I don't doubt that that fat-burning is more efficient also while fasting due to the fact that the body is already digesting it's fat stores not only for immediate energy needs but also for the complete running of our whole system. And a body that is experienced in fat burning for energy through exercise and efficient use of ketones while fasting should never dehydrate during a workout while there are water rich fat stores to draw from.
This is another example of something your health instructor would never agree with but that doesn't make him right. Get him to suggest another reason for my not dehydrating. :p
Common sense is all that is needed here. Though they undoubtedly should, not everyone that loses significant amounts of weight through fasting or even other means exercises while losing that weight. In spite of that fact I've never seen a before and after photo that shows a person go from a big blob of round fatty obesity to a smaller blob of humanity with all muscle gone and their fat still hanging off their bones. Sure there are spots on most of us where the fat tends to be harder to move than others, but ALL who lose weight lose FAT stores! There is always definition after lost weight, whether it be the muscle underneath or the bones! The evidence is just so blindingly obvious it only goes to show how educational indoctrination can blind people so completely to it. What do bears store before hibernating for the winter? Muscle or fat? Where do camels store their extra water?? The answer again is in their fat cells, not in their muscle cells. No amount of Education can change the facts of how the body works. That it can change our beliefs in or against those facts is certainly not in question.
Or as Scotty might have put it: "Ya canna change the Laws of Chemistry Jim!"
Okay rant over. :)
Andrew.
