I used to use distilled water only when I fasted or did a cleanse. The rest of the time I drank filtered tap water. Then the lake "turned over" and all tap water was so vile, I went to distilled water. A friend who was upgrading his distiller gave me his old one-I will not go back to tap water. You are right that most soft drinks are made with distilled or RO water, but then so are all the wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables that supply us with minerals. Water from wells, caves and springs have the rock minerals dissolved in them, not naturally chelated minerals our body can absorb and utilize. Only a small percentage of rock minerals can be used by the human body, the rest is excreted if the systems are strong and open enough. Rocks that cannot be excreted are stored in joints, tissue, and organs. They can cause kidney stones, arthritis, severe inflammation, blocked arteries when they combine with fatty cholesterol deposits and form plaque. Excess rock minerals cause pain, stiffness, strokes and heart attacks. Those insoluble, useless bits of rock consumed from drinking hard water will both age us and eventually kill us. No thank-you, I will not give up distilled water, I will "condition" it, but only with what my body can use.
