yes drofinna, we pretend, giving the impression that "everythings rosy in the garden" when it's not. i believe that there are many reasons why we hide behind the truth. ego? maybe, perhaps much of it comes from ones ideals that are not coming to fruition, so we disregard the reality of the situation and hang on to ones aspirations.
