Thanks for the comments and reference Chris, yes I appreciate Fonty's good advice, and I agree with you both.
In case anyone is wondering, I see the relative concerned only on occasions, I live 200 miles away, but his surrounding family are very old fashioned and from a working class background. Apart from the need for piped oxygen in the home, I could never persuade them to send him to a fasting retreat. However, given that is very bright, likes reading and is a law unto himself, if he thought fasting would get him a few extra years of quality life, he would make the necessary moves himself I am sure.
I think the best thing I can do is 1) show them what it has done for me at Christmas, and 2) perhaps buy him a book on fasting, if there is a good one around. I am sure there is.
When I look at him, legs swollen, struggling to move around on a hospital bed and get exhausted with his weight, well I know how that feels, because that was me 2 just weeks ago (but not quite so bad obviously). Given his age though, he is very energetic, when he has sufficient oxygen in his body! He also suffers from gall stones and a few other things, and this is the type of thing I am told fasting can sort out, plus asthma. Anyway, I won't try to force things, he asked me to come down again in a couple of weeks, so maybe we will have a chat then, and see what my extended family think of my new shape!
